UPDATE

Although DAVIS OPEN has been inactive for the past six months, the supporters of the Valley Oak Charter School have been busy writing a proposal for a charter school and have submitted it to the Davis Joint Unified School District Board for approval, perhaps as early as the next meeting.

Check out the Valley Oak Charter School at http://vocharter.org. Sign the petition if you agree with its principles. The Charter School will not be that different from the current school, and adds a focus on technology.

Stay informed. Read the Davis Enterprise or the People's Vanguard of Davis, http://davisvanguard.blogspot.com/ every day. Write letters to the Editor. Call School Board Members! Show up at School Board Meetings to voice your support for the Valley Oak Charter School! Keep Valley Oak open for neighborhood kids!

The following is an email from Mike Egan from October 24, 2007:

Dear Friend of Valley Oak:

The petition to establish a charter school at Valley Oak is ready and is now being circulated.  We are asking for your support and help.  This free, public charter school is open to children of any and all residents of California, including families from Davis and other communities.  You may view the charter petition online at http://vocharter.org/documents/vocs_charter_102207_w_appendices.pdf

The school will be founded on three pillars:

*       the maintenance of a successful neighborhood program
*       a system of cooperative school governance that encourages innovation, effectiveness and efficiency
*       the utilization of education technology for bridging the digital divide for students and their families

We are asking parents who are 'meaningfully interested' in having their children attend the school described in the charter to sign the petition.  If you are one of those parents, or know a parent who may be interested, petitions will be available to sign at a number of locations.

The following teachers have indicated that they are also 'meaningfully interested' in teaching at the school and should be able to direct you to a petition to sign.

Petitions can also be found at tables at Valley Oak Elementary near the bike racks and MPR during the week of Monday, October 29th through Friday, November 2nd (Conference Week) from 8 to 9 a.m. and from 1:30 to 5 p.m.

We will also have petitions at the Downtown Davis Halloween Celebration on Wednesday, October 31, 2007 from 1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.  Look for our table and Dweezil the Valley Oak Dragon at Outdoor Davis (232 E Street) on the E Street Plaza  near Baskin-Robbins.

If you have additional questions or need to find another time and place to sign the petition, contact Julie Cuetara at (530) 758-8238 home, (530) 400-8152 cell or cuetara@sbcglobal.net.

We are planning to submit the petition to the Davis Joint Unified School District in early November.  Stay tuned!  Thanks in advance for your support!
